About Us

As young girls my grandmother Lucinda would take us to the candle store and let us pick out our own candle to dress. I can still recall all of the  unique items which consisted of colorful candles, herbs, powders and blessed oils to name a few. I can remember the smell of the money blessing oil and can picture the burning candles the store would have lit and dressed.

For years into adulthood and long after she passed, I would go to the candle store periodically when I found myself in need of some extra money or good old fashioned luck. I'd buy and dress a candle and sure as day, life would improve.  As time went on eventually I stopped doing what I now know to be just one of my families spiritual practices.

There was no particular reason just the fact that life has a way of distracting us. After Covid-19 and a series of other challenges events. The memories started coming back and I could not pin point when or why I'd stopped doing something I loved so much. I like to refer to this chapter of my life as the awakening. Recently, I started back this tradition which continues to bring me so much joy.

Since then I have not only reclaimed our families tradition of dressing candles,  but I have also learned how to make my own candles. As a result, I founded Geechie Girlz, Candles Gifts and Oddities a place that understands the importance of continuing the traditions of our ancestors.

Candle dressing is a practice that derived from Hoodoo which is a combination of many African spiritual practices. Although candle work has been practiced in many cultures, as a descendent from the Carolinas and an African who is a part of the diaspora, I am reclaiming these practices as they relate to me and my lineage. I invite you to experience and enjoy them with me.
